Research question

Was antecedent statin use associated with lower all-cause mortality at 30, 60 and 90 days after COVID-19 diagnosis in a Medicaid population?

Data and methods

The study included 10,792 Mississippi Medicaid beneficiaries aged 18–64 with confirmed COVID-19 from March 2020 through June 2021. Antecedent statin use was defined from prescriptions in the 90 days before diagnosis. Propensity-score matching was used to balance statin users and non-users.

Selected findings

After matching, 1,107 statin users were compared with 1,107 non-users. In adjusted analyses, antecedent statin users had lower odds of death within 30 days (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.32–0.83), 60 days (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.37–0.85) and 90 days (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.37–0.82).

Interpretation

As an observational study, the results show association rather than proof of causation. The work illustrates how real-world claims data can be used to evaluate medication exposure and health outcomes in payer populations.
